Primeval landscape

You don’t have to go to the Amazon to see primeval landscape – it’s all there in the Rheinaue wetlands. Whether walking on clearly marked routes, taking a leisurely cycle along the “Veloroute Rhein” trail or enjoying an exciting boat ride, the unforgettable beauty of the wetlands is a treat for all lovers of nature.

Nature in its purest form

The Rheinaue wetlands are often referred to as the “Palatinatejungle” owing to the extensive forest, clear lakes and the arms of the Old Rhine. Alternately flooded and dry in season, the riparian forests are home to an exceptionally wide range of flora and fauna. Rare birds, beetles and butterflies take refuge here, as do many varieties of fish and amphibians who find their natural intact environment here. “Unspoilt” is no exaggeration – in fact, over half of the Germersheim district belongs to the “Natura 2000” ecological network of protected areas in the territory of the European Union.
