Siegfried Line in the Bienwald Forest

Siegfried Line

Some 630 km in length, the Siegfried Line was a WWII military defence system consisting of 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and countless tank traps on the western border of the German Reich from the Netherlands to Basel. One key part of the border fortifications was the “Otterbach sector” between Oberotterbach and Schaidt in the Bienwald Forest, where many bunker ruins are now protected as historic monuments while providing a valuable habitat for wildcats, bats, lizards and many other creatures.
