Germersheim Fortress

Germersheim Fortress

Originally built as a “bulwark against the French” between 1834 and 1861 on the orders of Ludwig I of Bavaria, the striking Fortress of Germersheim – the largest Bavarian fortress outside Bavaria – has lost none of its splendour today. The fortress’s “Weissenburger Tor” and “Ludwigstor” gates, its “Fronte Beckers” front (complete with “sculpture walk”), the Fronte Lamotte Park and the historic “Zeughaus” building have all been preserved to this day.
